Barcelona vs Espanyol: Preview, Possible Lineups & Prediction

Barcelona are set to host their arch-city rivals Espanyol at the iconic Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday, 11 April 2026. Kick-off is at 5.30 in the evening BST (6.30 WAT / 18:30 local time) – though Hansi Flick‘s team are more familiar with the evening atmosphere of the Camp Nou.

With La Liga title in their sights, Barcelona will face off against their city rivals in the intense and passionate Catalan derby. Espanyol, meanwhile, are sitting pretty in 10th place and don’t have to worry about relegation – but will still be eager to put the brakes on Barcelona’s title hopes and claim bragging rights for themselves.

Match Preview

Barcelona have been in scorching form, having now won their last six La Liga matches – and are yet to taste defeat at home this season. They even managed a 2-0 victory against Espanyol earlier this year – a result which will have given them a Welcome boost ahead of this meeting. More recently, Barcelona have been dominating derbies – so its no surprise that they’re strong favourites for this one.

They’ve got a high-pressing style of play which is designed to catch opponents off guard and they make the most of their quick counter-attacks and clinical finishing. This leaves Espanyol on the back foot.

Espanyol, meanwhile, are sitting mid-table and have been giving a good account of themselves under their coach. They’ve got good organisation, a strong press and some pacy transitions to their game which gives them a good platform. But they do struggle away from home – particularly against top-class teams – and their record at the Camp Nou is pretty poor. As such, this one is likely to be a bit of a battle – but Barcelona will still be looking to control possession and create chances on the break. We can expect a high-scoring match, as well – home side’s games at Camp Nou tend to be pretty open.

History: Barcelona have made their mark in most of the last few derbies, especially at home.

Possible Lineups

Barcelona (4-3-3): Joan García – Koundé, Cubarsí, Eric García, Balde – De Jong, Bernal, Olmo – Lamine Yamal, Lewandowski, Ferran Torres

Its a tough ask for Hansi Flick as he looks to get his team to peak performance without several key players – including Raphinha (out until early May with a hamstring injury), Andreas Christensen (ligament issues) and the fitness doubts surrounding players like Frenkie de Jong.

Lamine Yamal, however, is one player who is looking fit and firing on all cylinders, with his pacy runs out wide looking to cause problems for Espanyol. And then of course there’s Robert Lewandowski – the top scorer who is looking to lead the attack once again.

Espanyol (4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2): Dmitrović – El Hilali, Calero, Cabrera, Romero – González, Expósito – Puado, Lozano, Milla – Fernández

Espanyol have been largely spared the injury bug, and are able to name a pretty full-strength squad. They rely on strong defending to keep things tight, and then try and catch opponents on the break with quick counter-attacks. Javi Puado has proved himself to be a handful for opponents with his pace and ability to threaten on the break, as well as from set-pieces.

Prediction

With all this in mind, I reckon Barcelona’s home form, attacking quality and the sheer motivational boost they get from playing derby opponents will allow them to coast to a comfortable win.

Lamine Yamal & Robert Lewandowski are likely to be the key players for the home side, and you can expect them to create all sorts of problems for Espanyol. The visitors will do their best to put up a fight – and may even nick a consolation goal or two – but the hosts are likely to prove too strong.

Final score prediction : Barcelona 3-1 Espanyol
