Chelsea vs PSG: Preview, Possible Lineups & Prediction

Chelsea are hosting Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday, 17th March 2026, which is when the dust settles on what promises to be a thrilling second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16. Kick off’s at 8pm GMT (9pm WAT) and I’d imagine the energy at Stamford Bridge will be electric given the dire 5-2 defeat that the Blues took on the road in the first leg back on the 11th of March at Parc des Princes. Liam Rosenior is going to have a big task on his hands to lead his team through this one – especially after the dominating display they saw in Paris.
Match Summary
Chelsea are mid-table in the Premier League but they have shown flashes of brilliance in Europe. Unfortunately for them, it was those defensive errors in Paris which really cost them – Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha scoring those late goals which sealed the 5-2 scoreline after Chelsea had managed to equalize twice through Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernández. PSG had a total grip on possession and exploited Chelsea’s transitions – showing off their attack depth. At Stamford Bridge though Chelsea will have that passionate home crowd behind them, which could motivate them into a bit of a miracle comeback (a 3-0 win or better, on penalties) – especially with memories of their club world cup win over PSG last July. PSG on the other hand are feeling pretty confident after that first leg demolition, but are likely to rotate their players at least a little bit while still having the quality to see off any pressure they get.
Expect an open and high-intensity game – Chelsea need to go all out to attack if they are going to get through this one, while PSG will be looking to catch them out on breaks. Given both of their styles and the competition on the line, goals are pretty much a certainty – this one could be a real barnburner.
Head to head: PSGs first leg win has definitely given them the edge but Chelsea know that their home European nights can sometimes be a bit of magic.
Possible Lineups
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Sánchez – Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella. Caicedo and Fernández in midfield, Palmer, James, and Neto up front with Pedro.
Liam Rosenior is going to have some decisions to make as he has a number of players unavailable – Colwill, Gittens, and Estevão are all out – but he’s likely to have a few options up his sleeve to rotate and still get some of his key players in the starting lineup, like Cole Palmer who’s been having an absolute stormer of a season.
Paris Saint-Germain (4-3-3): Safonov – Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes. João Neves, Vitinha, and Zaïre-Emery in midfield and Barcola, Dembélé, and Kvaratskhelia up front.
Luis Enrique has got a pretty full squad to choose from at the moment – just a few minor concerns – but he’s got a great attacking threat with Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (who scored that amazing brace in the first leg) up front and Bradley Barcola’s pace to come in behind them.
Prediction
There is a chance that Chelsea’s desperation and the Stamford Bridge atmosphere will spark a response, with Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernández being key to unlocking PSG – but the 5-2 deficit is going to be a real ask against a clinical PSG team that thrives on counter attacks. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé will be looking for the spaces to exploit if Chelsea go all out for it. It’s likely that the Blues will score and make it an entertaining game, but in the end, PSG’s quality and the lead they’ve got should see them through comfortably in a goal-filled tie.
Final score prediction: Chelsea 2-2 Paris Saint-Germain (PSG advance 7-4 on aggregate)
