Newcastle vs Barcelona: Preview, Possible Lineups & Prediction

Newcastle United are gearing up to host Barcelona at St. James’ Park on Tuesday 10 March 2026 – 8pm start, GMT (9pm for fans in West Africa and Central Europe).

This one’s going to be a cracker in the UEFA Champions League, Round of 16 first-leg tie – and it pits the Magpies, making their knockout stage debut, against Barcelona, currently on top of La Liga, and looking to build on their league-phase win over the Toon (2-1 in September 2025, courtesy of a double from Marcus Rashford). The return leg takes place at Camp Nou on the 18th of March.

Match Summary

Newcastle are hovering around 12th in the Premier League, but they’ve shown that they can mix it with the big boys in Europe, edging through the playoffs after a tough league campaign. St. James’ Park is always a fortress, however, and the Magpies are itching for revenge after that earlier defeat. The thing is, though, they’ve been struggling with injuries in key areas – and they’re not out of the woods yet.

Barcelona, on the other hand, are running away with La Liga. They’re playing some top-notch football, with a solid defence and an attack that’s shooting goals for fun. They’ve been pretty dominant against English clubs of late, and they’ll be keen to get a strong away lead in this tie. Their win in the league phase was a tight one, but in the end it was Barcelona’s quality that shone through.

And this game? Well, it’s going to be a real battle of wills. Can Newcastle’s high-intensity press and counter-attacks take the scalp of the Catalan giants, or will Barcelona’s possession football and flair see them home? Either way, over 2.5 looks a pretty good bet in a match that’s shaping up to be a real thriller.

Head-to-head: Barcelona won the only recent meeting 2-1 – and that’s got to be a bit of a psychological blow for Eddie Howe’s side.

Possible Lineups

Newcastle United (a 4-3-3 formation): Pope in goal, Trippier and Thiaw holding the back four, with Burn or Botman in at centre back. Tonali and Willock in midfield, with Joelinton just behind the front three – and that’s Elanga, Gordon and Barnes leading the line.

Of course, injuries are a major concern for Eddie Howe, with Bruno Guimarães, Schär, Livramento and others either out or doubtful. Which is why Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon will be looking to provide some much-needed pace on the wings.

Barcelona (also 4-3-3): And in the away dugout, Hansi Flick has a full strength squad bar a couple of minor concerns (Gavi and Pedri are out for the long haul, and Rashford might be rotated in and out). Still, he’s got a solid team to choose from – and that includes Lamine Yamal, who offers a bit of flair from midfield. And then, of course, there’s the unstoppable Robert Lewandowski, leading the line for Barcelona.

Prediction

So, in the end, I’d say Barcelona are the ones to beat here. Their form, depth in attack and experience in the big time all give them a bit of an edge – and Hansi Flick has a very strong team at his disposal. They should be able to take the scalp of the Magpies – even away from home. Yamal and Lewandowski can punish any Newcastle mistakes, and their midfield control will put the brakes on the Toon’s high-intensity press. Still, Eddie Howe’s men will give it their all at home, and they might just get themselves a goal or two. But this one looks like a Barcelona win to me.

Final score prediction: Newcastle United 1-2 Barcelona
