Sporting vs Arsenal: Preview, Possible Lineups & Prediction

Sporting CP will be hosting Arsenal at Estádio José Alvalade on the 7th of April 2026. The kick-off time is set for 8pm local, which is 9pm WAT and 8pm BST.
This UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg pits Sporting against Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, who are coming off a decent run of form in the Premier League but have been struggling a bit lately and are carrying a few injury concerns.
Match Summary
Sporting have been one of the surprise packages in the Champions League, and will be looking to make it to the semi-finals for the first time in the modern era. They’ve had some great results at home, which is backed up by their attacking style of play under their coach.
At Alvalade they’ve won a number of games and created a lot of threat from set-pieces and quick counter-attacks. Arsenal, on the other hand, are the top team in the Premier League, but they’ve had some problems in cups, which adds a bit of pressure on them to deliver in Europe. The Gunners actually made it through the group phase pretty easily, but now they have to deal with the very intense atmosphere of Alvalade.
Looking back at the history of this fixture, it’s been pretty tight, with loads of draws, including a couple of past Europa League matches. You get the feeling that Arsenal might have the quality to edge this one, but Sporting have got a great home record and that’ll give them a lot of confidence.
Both teams like to attack, and you can imagine this one could be a real battle between the two managers. Over 2.5 goals has been a thing in recent big European nights, and this could be one of those ones where both teams find the net.
Head-to-head: Not a lot to choose between them, to be honest – they’re just too evenly matched. Draws have been the order of the day in recent years, but when Arsenal have managed to get one up on them, it’s usually been a pretty high-scoring affair.
Possible Lineups
Sporting CP (4-2-3-1): Rui Silva – Fresneda, Diomande, Inácio, Araújo – Morita, Bragança – Catamo, Trincão, Pedro Gonçalves – Suárez
They’ve got a few injury concerns at Sporting, though – Nuno Santos is out with a hamstring injury and Fotis Ioannidis has a knee problem. Suarez will be up front, bringing experience to the table, and he’s got the pace and trickery of Trincão and Pedro Gonçalves to call on for the counter-attacks.
Arsenal (4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1): Raya – White, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori – Zubimendi, Rice – Saka, Havertz/Ødegaard, Martinelli – Gyökeres
Arteta’s got a few problems on his hands too, with several players looking a bit dodgy after international duty. Whether Saka, Rice and others – like Jurrien Timber – make it will be a worry for him. Just to make things interesting though, they’ve got Gyökeres coming in who’s got a bit of a goal-scoring threat, and of course Saka will be a huge problem if he’s fit to take on wing duties – and Havertz of course will bring a lot of experience and skill to the midfield either way.
Prediction
Sporting are going to be pretty tough to break down at home, and with all these injuries at Arsenal, it’s going to be a tough ask for Arteta’s men. Suarez will be a handful on the break and that attacking style of play is going to cause problems for the Gunners.
On the other hand, you’ve got to think that Arsenal’s quality is going to tell in the end. Saka’s pace and set-pieces could be the difference – but it’s going to be very tight indeed.
Final score prediction: Sporting CP 1-2 Arsenal
